The area is located just north of Berlin, near village of Schönow. Schönower Heide mostly covered in trees with occasional meadows and sandy patches.
In the middle there’s a fenced space of about 140ha, set aside for wild herbivores like deer and mouflons. A watching platform is set up near a small lake, so that visitors can watch the animals roam.
There are many paths crossing the area to choose from, the main one taking around 5km and surrounding the wildlife area. Many others lead out to the surrounding forest.
During the cold war times, the area was used as military training grounds. Wandering around, one can still see the remainders of bunkers and other military constructions, as well as old bullet shells.
